WHAT AWARD-WINNING ACTUALLY MEANS (AND WHY IT MATTERS FOR YOUR HOME FRAGRANCE)

Everyone claims to be award-winning. We are going to tell you exactly what ours involved and why most brands would rather you did not ask.

THE TWO MOST OVERUSED WORDS IN LUXURY

Open any home fragrance website and count how long it takes before you see the words "award-winning." Ten seconds? Five? It has become the participation trophy of product marketing. A phrase so overused that it has lost almost all meaning, which is a shame, because when an award is legitimate, it should actually tell you something useful about the product you are about to buy.

FOX & WOLF won Best Luxury Candles in Spain 2021. We reference it in our marketing because it matters. But unlike most brands that slap a gold sticker on their packaging and hope you never look into it, we are going to explain exactly what that involved, what was assessed, and why it should influence your purchasing decision.

WHAT WAS ACTUALLY JUDGED

The award was part of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, which evaluates home fragrance and lifestyle brands across multiple criteria. This was not a public vote. It was not a social media popularity contest. It was not something we paid to enter and automatically received (which, for the record, is how a depressing number of "awards" in the fragrance industry actually work).

The assessment covered several areas:

  • Product quality: The actual formulation, ingredients, scent throw, burn performance, and consistency of our candles.
  • Brand reputation: Customer reviews, ratings, and the overall perception of the brand in the marketplace. At the time of the award, we already had over 100 five-star Google reviews. We now have over 310.
  • Innovation: What we were doing differently in the market. Our approach to scent architecture, our commitment to vegan and paraffin-free formulations, and our dual online and boutique retail model were all considered.
  • Customer experience: The end-to-end experience from browsing our website to receiving the product. Packaging, presentation, delivery, and aftercare.

In short, they did not just smell the candle. They evaluated the entire operation. And we came out on top in Spain.

WHY MOST BRANDS WILL NOT TELL YOU THIS

Because most "awards" in the home fragrance industry do not work this way. There is a thriving industry of pay-to-play award schemes where brands submit an entry fee (sometimes hundreds or thousands of euros), fill in a form, and receive a badge they can use in their marketing. No independent testing. No product evaluation. No verification of customer satisfaction. Just a transaction dressed up as recognition.

We are not naming names. But if you see a brand with six different award badges on their homepage and none of them link to an explanation of what was assessed, that should tell you something.

The reason we are transparent about our award is precisely because it was not a vanity exercise. It was external, independent validation of what we already knew: that the products we hand-pour in our studio in Orihuela Costa are among the best luxury candles available in Spain.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

When you buy an award-winning product, what you are really buying is a verified standard. Someone outside the company, with no financial incentive to be kind, assessed the product and said: this is excellent.

For a candle or home fragrance, that assessment covers things you cannot evaluate from a photograph. Scent throw (how far the fragrance travels). Clean burn (no tunnelling, no soot, no mushrooming wicks). Ingredient quality (the difference between cheap paraffin filler and a refined vegetable wax blend). Fragrance longevity (whether the scent lasts the full burn time or fades after the first hour). Packaging integrity (whether the product arrives in the same condition it left the studio).

These are the things that separate a genuinely excellent candle from one that looks nice on Instagram but disappoints in person. And they are exactly the things that were evaluated when FOX & WOLF won Best Luxury Candles in Spain.

SINCE THE AWARD

Winning an award is a moment. What you do after it is what matters. Since 2021, we have:

The award opened doors. But the product quality is what keeps them open. Over 310 five-star reviews do not happen by accident. They happen because the candle on your shelf performs exactly as promised, every single time.

THE REAL TEST

Here is the uncomfortable truth about awards: they are only as useful as the product behind them. An award-winning candle that tunnels, throws weak scent, or arrives damaged is still a bad candle. The badge on the box does not change the experience on your shelf.

We stand behind ours. Every 300g Iconic Candle delivers 55+ hours of burn time. Every formulation is vegan, paraffin-free, and cruelty-free. Every product is hand-poured in our studio. And every customer gets the same standard of product, whether they found us through the award or through a friend who could not stop talking about Oud.

That is what award-winning actually means. Not a sticker. A standard.
