FROM THAI SPAS TO JAPANESE FORESTS: THE TRAVEL STORIES BEHIND OUR SCENTS

FROM THAI SPAS TO JAPANESE FORESTS: THE TRAVEL STORIES BEHIND OUR SCENTS

We do not name our fragrances after what they smell like. We name them after how they make you feel.

FRAGRANCE SHOULD TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE

Every FOX & WOLF scent begins the same way: with a place, a moment, and a feeling that was too good to forget. We travel. We collect experiences. And then we do something most fragrance brands do not bother with. We try to capture the actual sensory memory in a way that is honest, not generic.

This is why our fragrances have names like Hathai Spa rather than “Fresh Lemongrass.” Why we called it Shin-Rin-Yoku instead of “Forest Green.” The name is the first chapter of the story. The scent is the rest.

Here is where they came from.

HATHAI SPA | THAILAND

Lemongrass. Black Vanilla. Jasmine.

Hathai Spa was born in Thailand. Specifically, in the hush of temple gardens and the scent of fresh herbs carried on warm, humid air. If you have ever stepped into a traditional Thai spa, you will know that moment: the shift from noise to stillness, the immediate calm that comes from lemongrass-infused steam and jasmine-scented towels folded just so.

Our Hathai Spa fragrance blends bright lemongrass with creamy black vanilla and delicate jasmine. It is light, calming, and quietly luxurious, designed to bring the peace of a Thai spa into your living room, your bathroom, your bedroom. The scent sits in the Fresh Floral family but has enough warmth from the vanilla to stop it feeling clinical. It is a fragrance that makes you slow down. That is the point.

Available as a candle, reed diffuser, wax melts, electric diffuser oil, and home and linen spray. Because once you find your Thai spa moment, you want it everywhere.

SHIN-RIN-YOKU | JAPAN

Dark Chocolate. White Truffle. Ylang-Ylang. Orchid. Forest Moss.

Shin-Rin-Yoku translates (roughly) as “forest bathing”: the Japanese practice of walking slowly and mindfully through woodland, using all five senses to connect with the natural world. It was formally introduced as a public health practice in Japan in the 1980s, and there is now a growing body of research supporting its benefits for stress reduction, immune function, and mental clarity.

We did not want to make a fragrance that smelled like “generic forest.” Pine air freshener already exists, and nobody needs more of that. Instead, we focused on what a Japanese forest actually feels like underfoot and in the air: the damp earthiness of moss-covered stones, the subtle sweetness of orchid petals carried on the breeze, and the surprising richness of fungi and decaying organic matter that gives a forest floor its depth.

The result blends rich dark chocolate and white truffle with delicate orchid petals, ylang-ylang, and watery florals. Forest moss grounds the scent, while light powdery musk adds softness. It is slightly sweet, deeply earthy, and perfectly poised between strength and beauty. It sits in the Oriental Floral family, which surprises people who expect something green and sharp. This is a forest at dusk, not a forest on a label.

OUD | ASSAM, INDIA

Oud. Guaiac Wood. Peony. Spiced Rose Water.

We have written a full deep-dive on oud elsewhere on the blog, but the short version: our OUD fragrance was inspired by the spice-rich markets of Assam in northeastern India, where wild Aquilaria trees produce the world’s most valued agarwood. The air in those markets is thick with oud, warm spice, and the sweetness of rose water. It is a sensory experience that stays with you for years.

Our interpretation blends soft oud with smoky guaiac wood and delicate peony, finished with spiced rose water. It is a love letter to Assam: earthy, powdery, and deeply seductive.

AND THE REST OF THE COLLECTION

These three are just the beginning. Saudade captures the melancholic beauty of Portuguese fado culture. Boketto is named after the Japanese concept of gazing vacantly into the distance, a celebration of doing nothing beautifully. Giau-Sang draws from the warmth and energy of Southeast Asian markets. Even our newer fragrances like Óiche (the Irish word for “night”) carry the same philosophy: a real place, a real feeling, translated into scent.

Every fragrance in the FOX & WOLF collection is hand-poured in Spain, vegan, cruelty-free, and available as candles, reed diffusers, wax melts, electric diffuser oils, and home and linen sprays. Because we believe the right fragrance does not just make your home smell nice. It makes it feel like somewhere you want to be.

FAQ

Where do you get the inspiration for your fragrance names?
Every name comes from a real place, a real journey, or a real cultural concept. We travel together, and the scents we encounter become the starting point for new fragrances. The names are chosen to honour the source, not to simplify it.

What does “Thai spa candle” actually mean?
It usually means a candle featuring lemongrass, jasmine, or other aromatics associated with Thai wellness traditions. Our Hathai Spa is our take on this: a blend of lemongrass, black vanilla, and jasmine inspired by actual Thai spa experiences.

What is “Japanese forest bathing” or Shinrin-yoku?
A Japanese wellness practice of immersing yourself mindfully in a forest environment. It has been a recognised public health practice in Japan since the 1980s. Our Shin-Rin-Yoku fragrance is inspired by this concept.

Do you ship internationally?
